One of my favorite things about Chicago is its proximity to so many wonderful weekend getaways. I’m a Chicago native and went to school in Wisconsin so I’ve been around the Midwest quite a bit, not to mention the world, and there are very few places that I love as much as Madison, WI.
2.5 hours away, Madison is on two beautiful lakes. It’s known for its beer, delicious food and incredible views. I can’t do it justice with words, you just have to go. My top picks for Madison, WI :
1) Beer at the student union on the terrace
2) Farmers market Saturday morning – it is one of the top 5 in the country and it all takes place around the capital building. It has the freshest food but go early !
3) For real German goodness and polka dancing, hit up the Essen house. It’s a 15 minute walk from downtown and has giant glass boots filled with beer !
4) State Street : the pedestrian mall that is the center of the city and runs from the University of Wisconsin campus to the beautiful capital building. Walk it, shop it, enjoy it
5) Paul’s Club: the only bar I’ve ever been to with a tree inside
6) Spotted Cow the most popular beer in Wisconsin. It’s light, and there’s plenty of other, delicious beer to try, but Spotted Cow is what got me obsessed with beer in the first place
7) The Old Fashioned: typical Wisconsin cuisine right on capital square. It has fresh ingredients and awesome cheesy delights
8) Anything on capital square (I love the bar Jenna’s)
9) Bring your bikes: There are some of the best bike paths around !
Anywhere you go in Madison will bring friendly faces, beautiful scenery, fantastic, fresh cuisine and so much fu ! Oh, and best of all it will be the cheapest weekend you’ll ever spend for the quality you’ll get. Take your car or a bus from O’hare and just enjoy !
